Project: A9/A85

Client: Perth & Kinross Council

Flex MSE Units: 568

Type of Install: Flex MSE & Geogrid

Application: Deer Leap Platforms

Vegetation Solution: Hydroseed

As part of Phase 1 of the Perth Transport Futures Project, there was a requirement for two Deer Leap Platforms to allow for mammalian wildlife to safely escape the new A9/A85 Junction.

The design engineers on the project specified Flex MSE® as an alternative to traditional methods such as concrete or gabion baskets, to allow for the installation to blend in with the Scottish countryside.

Method: Using a biaxial geogrid, laid to around 80% wall height, Flex MSE® GTX bags and Interlocking plates were laid in a small foundation trench and built up in a trapezoidal design, backfilling and compacting after every 2-3 rows. Flex MSE's versatility allowed for construction of a near-vertical (85°) retaining wall, directly behind the site boundary fence. Once complete, the two installations were the hydroseeded with a low-maintenance grass mix.

Additional Comments/Notes:

As Flex MSE® requires no heavy machinery to install - the entire installation was completed in only 3 days, saving the contractors time and money, providing a green solution for this ambitious project.
