RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016, “Temple Garden” by Cholmondeley Castle Gardens, Silver-Gilt Medal Winner – Flex MSE® Vegetated Wall System, 2016
Case Study: Temple Garden, RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016
As part of the 2016 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Cholmondeley Castle Gardens, in partnership with Mornflake, were awarded a Silver-Gilt Medal for their recreation of Cholmondeley’s Temple Water Garden.
Incorporating Flex MSE® Geomodular Block & Interlocking Plate System to create the pond walls, after months of preparation and hard work from the Cholmondeley Castle Garden Team (led by Barry Grain, Head Gardener), the installation was awarded by the judges on 23rd May 2016.
Using plants and materials from around the Castle Gardens and filled Flex MSE GTX Bags & Plates, the Team were able to form the water feature, as well as a stunning planting area. The Flex MSE units worked as not only the pond walls, but also as a planting bed for the vegetation that had been grown especially for the show.
In a statement to the press, Barry Grain, Head Gardner said, “The RHS Chelsea Flow Show is arguably one of the finest in the world. It was an absolute honour to be accepted to exhibit, and to come away with a Silver-Gilt Medal was beyond our wildest dreams.”
Sam Youd, AHRHS Horticultural Adviser said, “…my first thought was to use the Flex MSE product due to its flexibility. Not only was it portable, but natural, and because of the nature of the material, we were able to plant up the bags straight away.
“This made a major contribution to being able to produce an exhibit which gained a Silver-Gilt Medal. I would have no hesitation in recommending the (Flex MSE) product again, not only for use at shows, but for any other major works involving water within the landscape, however big the project.”
Flex MSE GTX Bags are both water and root-permeable, and also UV-stabilised. This means, once fully covered in vegetation, Flex MSE has a design life of 120-years, but can also be used in temporary installations such as the award-winning Temple Garden.
